Our Principals

Todd Simmons

Todd Simmons became principal of Cedar Springs High School in July 2022.

Before joining Cedar Springs Public Schools, Mr. Simmons served as principal of Pewamo-Westphalia Middle/High School for 14 years. During his tenure, he worked alongside educators, students, and families to help Pewamo-Westphalia become a perennial top-20 academic institution in Michigan, as recognized by U.S. News & World Report. The district also earned recognition for its outstanding fine arts program and captured 14 MHSAA state championships across seven sports. In 2020, Mr. Simmons and the school community were honored with the MASSP/MASC Principal of the Year Award, and he was named the NASSP State Principal of the Year.

A native of Iron River, Michigan, Mr. Simmons graduated from West Iron County High School before earning degrees in industrial education and history education from Central Michigan University. While at CMU, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of playing four years as a non-scholarship walk-on for the men's basketball team.

Before becoming a school administrator, Mr. Simmons taught industrial education for five years at Pewamo-Westphalia and Tri County Schools. He also returned to Central Michigan University for two years as an assistant coach for the CMU men's basketball team.

Outside of school, Mr. Simmons enjoys spending time with his wife, Lindsey, and their three children, Ronni, Braidi and Ty. He also enjoys reading the Bible, exercising, playing basketball and cheering on Central Michigan athletics.

Mr. Simmons is driven to pursue his personal best each day while inspiring and encouraging students, staff and the entire Cedar Springs community to do the same. He is committed to building authentic relationships, fostering a positive school culture and helping every Red Hawk grow, succeed and reach their full potential. Go Cedar!

Edward Johns

High School Assistant Principal

Eddie Johns joined Cedar Springs High School in the fall of 2014 as a science teacher and coach. In the fall of 2022, he transitioned into the role of assistant principal. One of the most rewarding parts of his current role is the opportunity to visit classrooms each day, continue learning from outstanding educators and connect with even more students.

Mr. Johns earned a bachelor's degree in education with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry from Grand Valley State University. He also holds a master's degree in educational leadership from Central Michigan University and a master's degree in education business administration from the American College of Education.

Outside of school, Mr. Johns enjoys spending time with his wife and their four children. He loves basketball, the outdoors and nature, with cycling being his favorite hobby.

Mr. Johns is committed to supporting students, building strong relationships and creating a positive learning environment where every Red Hawk has the opportunity to grow, succeed and reach their full potential.

Matthew Moffett

Athletic Director and Assistant Principal

Matt Moffett serves as the athletic director and assistant principal at Cedar Springs High School. He joined Cedar Springs Public Schools in 2021, bringing a wide range of experience from his previous roles as a physical education teacher, coach, athletic director and assistant principal.

Mr. Moffett earned his bachelor's degree in physical education and health education from Eastern Michigan University, where he was a member and team captain of the baseball team. He later earned a master's degree in educational leadership from the University of Michigan-Flint.

Outside of school, Mr. Moffett enjoys spending time with his wife, Kim, and their two sons, Weston and Brooks. As a family, they enjoy the outdoors, and he is an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mr. Moffett is committed to helping students succeed both in the classroom and through athletics. He believes in building strong relationships, fostering leadership and character, and creating opportunities for every Red Hawk to grow, compete and reach their full potential.
